Oona Culley’s series of framed artworks were developed for two of the sitting rooms for parents in the International Private Patients’ Ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. She has meticulously gilded aluminium leaf onto paper by hand, to create highly reflective images emulating light reflected on water. The artworks were developed from the artist’s drawings and photographs of rippled water surfaces and winter trees reflected in London’s rivers, canals and puddles.
By reflecting the light of the surrounding hospital rooms, the artworks themselves are always changing. They reflect people passing by and the changing light throughout the day. As you move, the reflected light changes with you. The use of imagery of nature and calm water in a hospital setting is intended to create an environment for restful contemplation that can be beneficial to health and to patients’ experience. The artwork was commissioned by Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust.
